Welcome to the re-designed Parish Council website.
In November 2019, Cholmondeley and Chorley Parish Council carried out an internal review of the Parish Council website, noting a number of usability issues that made the website not as simple as possible to understand.
In addition, in order to comply with recently introduced accessibility regulations, significant re-design of the website was required in order to make the website compliant with the new accessibility regulations. For example, you should be able to:
- change colours
- contrast levels and fonts
- zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
- navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
- navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
- listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)
(AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.)
Based on the review findings and the new accessibility requirements, a decision was taken by the Parish Council to replace the existing website completely with a new design, rather than to try to modify the existing one.
Custom website design performed by professional service companies can be expensive, however, so the Parish Council decided to use a WordPress template that is by design fully accessible as the basis for the new website.
At the same time, and to make the redesign process easier, it was decided to move the Parish Council website to a different hosting company.
Both decisions resulted in substantial cost savings for the Parish Council, both in terms of the redesign (which was carried out voluntarily by members of the Parish Council) and the ongoing cost of hosting.
