Using an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED)

Modern AEDs are very easy to use and do not require any formal training. Once you call 999, the ambulance service operator will guide you through the process.

The  AED defibrillator has been chosen for its ability to assist both adults and children in sudden cardiac arrest. It provides visual and audio instructions to guide you through the process. You cannot make a mistake—just follow the given instructions.

Reporting Issues

If you find that an AED has been used, is missing, or is damaged, please report it to the Parish Council so that it can be rectified as soon as possible.

Instructions for Use

If a defibrillator is required due to cardiac arrest, call 999. The call handler will provide the location and access code for the locked cabinet.

1. Turn on the defibrillator by pressing the green button and follow the instructions.

2.  Attach the electrode pads to the patient’s chest, as shown in the diagram on the AED.

3. Stop CPR and do not touch the patient whilst the AED analyses the heart rhythm.

4. If a shock is needed, the AED will either prompt you to press the shock button or deliver the shock automatically.

5. Follow the AED’s prompts—it will advise you when to continue CPR.

6. Continue chest compressions and rescue breaths until the patient shows signs of life or the AED reanalyses the heartbeat.
